Not trying to be a wise ass, but I recently discovered something.
I did a tiny bit of research into TFT monitors, and it seems "wide screen" monitors are all 16:10, meaning a little less wide than the widescreen you get with HDTV.
This means a slightly different ratio, meaning a different resolution(s) as well.
I don't know if this means you can technically call 16:10 "wide screen"...
Anyway, I do agree about the feature request, as I plan on getting a TFT like that myself for my new computer, and I'd love to game in wide screen(ish).
For instance the Unreal engine supports any (custom) resolution, and it will work as long as your video card and monitor support it.
I have no idea how hard this is to program something like that, but it is the ideal situation from my perspective.

Requires a rewrite of the renderer. The game already renders as 16:10 anyways.

A rewrite very sounds like "it ain't gonna happen unless someone else starts working on it", right?.

Re: Feature request
Just for the record, 16:9 resolutions were implemented in ZDoom, apparently without rewriting the renderer. I'm not saying Zdoom is JFSW, but perhaps there's another way around it.
