I'm havin' startup problems... Well, one really...
It is, that I cannot even start it (the program) up...
The setup program is fine, sets up everything and saves the config just perfectly.
I get the standard "Blue Screen of Death" with every attempt, and it really screws up my display settings (even inadvertantly corrupted my registry settings 'cause I had to hard-reboot)
I first attempted to use a version 1.7 Atomic Duke3D *.grp file, but received the BSOD... Then I tried the plain-jane v1.3d oldskool Registered version... and still, no dice.
And even the old documentation states that I didn't need the *.con files, but I added them since the newer builds request it, and all in all, the BSOD dominates the scene.
Now, I'm not complaining, I've fixed everything. But I want to figure out why I can't play this great port. (From past experience, love it.)
Lemme know if anyone's havin' the same problems or if it's my archaic POS computer, hah!

ok, seriously here... (Step by Step...)
Once again, like a stupid animal, I've attempted to start up the program again.
And, as suspected, I []BSOD'd myself into the stoneage...
This time usin' v1.4 of the Atomic Edition...
I didn't do anything in the setup program save for editing the keys for movement, etc...
Video settings were set at default, as was the Audio settings...
First it loads in the spiffy loading screen, goes through numerous messages, etc... Then cuts right to the BSOD... Hitting ESC twice, it cuts back to the desktop... Where it then freezes and tells me "Explorer" caused an error, etc... Then total lock up. No nothin', just a freeze like your mind when you've eaten ice cream too fasts.
Whereby then I am forced to hard-restart via the reset button on the front of the case, and then Windows fails to load... (no video, something's corrupted somewhere, in the registry maybe?)
'Cause after the fail to load Windows, I restarted in safe mode, and removed *then* reinstalled the drivers for the dang thing.
And I'm stuck in the same rut...
I'm beginning to think it's this GeForce 4 card, either that or my computer seriously hates video games...
>_<

Startup Problem(s)
Anyone else got ideas? I'm clean out. I'm assuming you're still using Win9x on that machine. I'll have to check my Win98 machine to see whether I can get it to crash.

You are correct, sir. I'm usin' Win98SE.
I've also taken the liberty to install the latest DirectX v9.0c, as well.
I mean, it doesn't matter a whole lot, I've a new mainboard/processor comin' up real soon, so I'll be switching to XP...
But I'd at least like to know why this bugger isn't loading/starting, tho...

What OS are you using? Because I had the same problem when I installed the latest driver of NVIDIA in WinMe (yes, I know).
Try to run the game without Polymost. (what is, without OpenGL). Select in the SETUP.exe in the Display & Sound option, for a resolution using 8b colors. Then JFDuke will use the 'classic render'. If the game is working fine then, then you know it's something about that OpenGL of NVIDIA.
It seems that this new driver for 98/Me screws up OpenGL support. Every application using it will BSOD. So if you are using 98 or Me, install the 56.* driver instead of 61.76 driver. It can be found on the site, just like somewhere for archive drivers....

(just a bit to late with my reply )

It happened to my friend who has the latest ATI card on a windows xp system with a 3 gig processor and 512mb RAM. Big ol' crash.

Alright, I've concluded (with Tijeman) that my GeFarce 4 card was what was buggin' out so much... I've since traded ''up'' to a Radeon 9200 and since then, everything is kosher.
Sorry to be whinin'.
